How your hairstyle could be harming your hair

What is traction alopecia?

Traction hair loss is specifically related to external forces pulling on the hair over time. If your hair has repeatedly been pulled back into a tight hairstyle, such as a bun, ponytail, braid or weave, over a long period of time, this is something that you might experience.

What are the signs of traction alopecia?

In the early stages, traction alopecia creates folliculitis — a type of inflammation around the hair follicles that is characterised by little red bumps around the base of the follicles. If the inflammation isn’t remedied — by stopping the hair-styling that is causing it — then it can permanently scar the follicle rendering it incapable of producing a hair.

You may also notice that your hairline is receding and that you have a lot of wispy, baby hairs in your hairline.

Can I reverse traction alopecia?

In the early stages, traction alopecia can be reversed by styling the hair in a way that doesn’t put it under tension in quite the same way.

DOSE Traction has been designed to help support hair growth alongside gentler styling and contains minoxidil and melatonin to help reinforce weakened strands and promote hair growth, as well as niacinamide to help soothe the scalp. It may not always be possible to restore all lost hair especially in cases where the follicle has been permanently damaged by scarring.
