How to grow a better beard

Why is my beard so sparse?

  • Alopecia barbae - This is a form of alopecia areata, an autoimmune condition where the body attacks hair follicles, leading to patches of hair loss. While alopecia areata can affect various areas of the body, including the scalp, when it affects the beard area, it is referred to as alopecia barbae.
  • Telogen effluvium - While less common, telogen effluvium, a form of hair shedding, can affect the beard. It happens when the hair growth cycle is disrupted which typically leads to excess hair shedding from the scalp, but it can also affect the beard area. You can find out more about it here.
  • Chemotherapy - Some chemotherapy drugs can result in hair loss — which can also affect facial hair. This is because chemotherapy drugs tend to target the fast-growing cells in the body indiscriminately and that can include hair follicle cells. Click here to find out more.
  • Traction alopecia - Men who tie or style their beard hair in tight plaits or twists over a long period of time may suffer from traction alopecia. This is a form of hair loss where constant tension on the hair can damage the follicle permanently causing hair loss. You can find out more about traction alopecia here.
  • Genetics - There are some people who will always struggle to grow a full beard and this may well be a genetic trait.

How can I grow a better beard?

DOSE Beard combines clinically proven minoxidil and melatonin to stimulate the follicles and encourage a thicker beard. If traction alopecia has permanently damaged the follicles, or if your sparse beard is the result of genetics, it cannot create more follicles, however DOSE Beard  can help to thicken existing hairs making your beard appear fuller.
